Hearing loss is one of the more taboo conversations when it comes to health in America, however that’s nothing to do with its rarity. To the contrary, there are currently more than 400 million adults worldwide with a “disabling” hearing loss (40 dB or more), and by 2050, the number will increase 900 million, or 1 in 10 worldwide. How To Get Started
1. Ask yourself these questions:
Have I noticed a change in my hearing?
Do I have any difficulties understanding group or one-on-one conversations?
Have I had to turn the television up louder than usual?
Do I have trouble hearing high pitched noises, like certain instruments, or birds in nature?
Has anyone pointed out to me that they think I may have trouble understanding others?
2. Take a free, online hearing test, such as Unitron’s 3-Minute Comprehensive Hearing Test*
3. Call one of your local hearing aid providers to schedule an appointment. Taking this next step depends on how you feel, and whether you are ready. However, if you are, in an introductory hearing appointment, your hearing aid specialist will conduct another hearing test. This test takes about an hour, and will inform you of your level of hearing loss, as well as which level of hearing aid technology they suggest for you to regain your previous levels of clarity.
Over one-third of adults over age 65 have a hearing loss. Don’t miss out on the world’s beautiful sounds because you feel alone, or are worried about a stigma surrounding hearing aids.
